Trash to dresser

What is it about a piece of furniture that makes me slam on the breaks and pull over to haul it home? I guess I have the wonderful gift (or curse, depending on who you ask) of seeing potential in just about anything old
When I saw this beauty at the curb for the trash man I knew I had to make it mine!

I picked up this dresser and loading it in my suv all by myself. If you have ever done this give me an Amen!!
When I got it home and saw that the top was chipped I knew it was going to take a lot of work to get the thin strip of veneer off.

I started scraping it off using a hammer and my favorite tool, a Painters 6 in 1 scraper.
This process was very time consuming! I honestly spent about 10 hours chipping away! I used a damp towel and iron on the steam setting to loosen the glue and remaining pieces of veneer.
Look at the beautiful wood that was preserved under that mess!!

Unfortunately during the scraping process the wood was chipped so I had to used wood filler to fix some areas.
I lightly sanded the top with 220 grit sand paper and wiped the dresser down with a damp cloth to clean off all of the dust.
I used stain that I had left over from another project and put 3 coats of stain over a few days. Two coats of polyurethane, a fresh coat of white chalk paint, and some knobs recylced from another project and tada!!
Get ready for the stunning after photos..........

This was a labor of love and a dresser that I will keep for a long time! My biceps are still trying to recover from all of that scraping :)
